Problem
The events of February 24, 2022 led to serious disruptions in the scheduled movement of trains on Ukrainian railways. Loss of current, damage to tracks, proximity to hostilities - all this caused violations of the usual traffic schedules. It turned out that the current system of traffic control according to schedules, introduced by the customer, does not meet the requirements of the situation. The task set by the customer is to offer a software and hardware solution, which will allow you to monitor the passage of trains online at all control points on the route with the fixing of the time of being late or ahead of schedule.
Proposed solution
Our specialists have conducted a study of the client's system operating conditions and identified the following additional factors that complicated problem-solving:
Difficult installation and operation conditions for GPS equipment (strict conditions for placing equipment in the wagon, lack of constant power supply, different types of power sources, challenging satellite signal reception conditions)
Migration of wagons from one route to another
Communication disruptions along the route
Possibility of traveling to the destination via different routes
Need for integration with the client's existing systems, algorithms, and business processes
During the implementation process, a large number of tests were conducted on various equipment, its connections and settings, as well as tracking schedule algorithms. A significant challenge was restoring control over train movement after several hours of no communication and possibly no GPS signal.
Result
As a result of the work performed, the client received a set of equipment based on the Bitrek 520L tracker and recommendations for its installation and power supply, which best suit the operating conditions. The second component of the solution involved upgrading the Passenger Transportation module within the Fleetix software. The module gained the ability to:
Export all checkpoints to the system according to the client's requirements
Generate schedules based on the client's principles, closely aligning with their current methods and algorithms
Provide online monitoring of train movement along the route, taking into account challenging operating conditions, primarily the lack of communication for several hours.
